Conviction

Why hold on to slipping sand
Why must you take a stand
Why give yourself away to them
Why must you stoop to condemn

Why expect them to rise
Why should you despise
Why see the best in all
Why be surprised at your fall

Why let them touch you
Why expect what’s fair and due
Why think it over again
Why go through that lane

Why be a slave to your strengths
Why fight for them at any lengths
Why should you put them on sale
Why allow others to prevail

Why should conviction help you along
When living with conviction is wrong
When conviction serves no purpose
When all it means is inane fuss

Why find fault with their actions
When actions betray their attractions
When an act is not held sacred
When an act of conviction is all they dread

Why look within and refuse
When it won’t go away, nor diffuse
When you are standing alone
When you want none to atone

Why not just cry out loud
When sunshine struggles with a cloud
When waves can’t touch the sky
When they are never tired to try

When it is that binds your soul
When it is that makes you whole
When it shall guide you through
When it will ever be true

Do you feel like throwing a stone
When dogs fight over a bone
Do you ever kill the dead
When all their life they just bled

Turn around to have a look
There never is a heavenly brook
You must wade through muck and slime
And embellish your dignity sublime

March on to the summit
And lighten up the unlit
Look up higher and higher still
Persevere until you fulfill

Keep smiling just the same
Put them all to happy shame
Let them tear you apart
Love them more, soul and heart
